Army holds veterans’ rally in Baramulla to mark Battle of Shalateng Day

Baramulla, Nov 4 (KNS) : The Indian Army on Wednesday organised an ex-servicemen rally and educational outreach programme at Sharifabad Military Garrison in north Kashmir's Baramulla district to mark Battle of Shalateng Day, with around 400 veterans and 200 students and teachers participating in the event.

The programme was organised by the Army's Counter Insurgency Force (Kilo) and presided over by Major General Tushar Sharma, General Officer Commanding (GOC), Counter Insurgency Force (Kilo).

The rally aimed at addressing the welfare-related concerns of ex-servicemen and their families, besides familiarising students with the region's military history.

Dedicated helpdesks and awareness stalls were set up to facilitate veterans' access to Central and Jammu and Kashmir government welfare schemes, pension-related services, documentation assistance, healthcare facilities and resettlement opportunities.

Representatives from JAK LI Records, Defence Pension Disbursement Office (DPDO), Srinagar, Zila Sainik Welfare Office, Srinagar, and Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS) interacted with veterans and provided assistance regarding pension, healthcare and other post-retirement benefits.

Medical facilities were also made available, while dedicated interaction sessions allowed former servicemen to raise grievances and seek clarification on welfare-related matters.

As part of the programme, students and teachers from Army Goodwill Schools in Baramulla, Kupwara, Bandipora and Ganderbal districts visited the military establishment to learn about the historical significance of the Battle of Shalateng and its place in the region's military history.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

The event also featured a wreath-laying ceremony to pay homage to soldiers who laid down their lives, followed by cultural performances by students.

The Battle of Shalateng, fought on November 7, 1947, was a significant engagement during the 1947-48 Jammu and Kashmir conflict. The Indian Army's 3 PARA (Special Forces) also participated in the battle and was subsequently awarded the Battle Honour 'Shalateng' in recognition of its role.

Addressing the gathering, the Army commander highlighted the importance of recognising the contribution of veterans, preserving military history and strengthening the bond between the armed forces and local communities.

The observance also provided an opportunity to acknowledge the contribution of ex-servicemen while encouraging younger generations to understand the values of service, sacrifice and patriotism.

The Army said the initiative reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare and dignity of veterans and their families, while strengthening its engagement with students and communities across north Kashmir.(KNS)
