With an aim of curbing the plastic pollution & ensuring home composting of waste, the students and teachers of Salsabeel Educational Institute Humhama on eve of World Environment Day pledged to undertake composting of kitchen waste in their respective houses. Noted social activist and Chairman of Jammu & Kashmir RTI Movement Dr Raja Muzaffar Bhat and his colleague Raja Amir Khan made the students and teachers to take the pledge in this direction.
Dr Raja Muzaffar Bhat who had been invited as a guest speaker on the world environment day gave a detailed speech on ill effects of plastic pollution and explained in detail how unscientific waste disposal was impacting Kashmir valley. He said that more than 11.50 Lakh metric tons of untreated waste is dumped at Achan Saidapora Srinagar which according to reports can get doubled in another 10 years if stringent measures were not taken.
"Unscientific waste management was a big problem not only in Srinagar but in towns and villages of Kashmir as well. I along with my colleagues urged upon the students and staff of Salsabeel Educational Institute to start compositing their kitchen waste in their respective houses and display the work through a dedicated whatsapp group on a daily basis.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp ChannelWe would be handholding the students and staff in this direction and this is the best way to commemorate the world environment day. Otherwise we hold these events and forget the environment on the very next day . I also urged students to use steel water bottles instead of plastic bottles as plastic bottles are harmful because it releases micro and nanoplastics" said Dr Raja Muzaffar
Students and staff assured Dr Raja Muzaffar Bhat and his entire team of Jammu & Kashmir RTI Movement that they would abide by starting waste management from their houses , followed by treating waste scientifically in Salsabeel Educational Institute as well. Principal of Salbsabeel Educational Institute Mushtaq Ahmad Bhat, Mohammad Ibrahim event coordinator , Raja Amir Khan environmental activist also spoke on the occasion.
