Srinagar, Oct 21 (KNS): More than 1,000 artisans, weavers and members of cooperative societies and self-help groups in Kashmir have received training in branding, packaging and Geographical Indication (GI) labelling to help improve the marketability of their handmade products.
The Directorate of Handicrafts and Handloom, Kashmir, in collaboration with the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Srinagar, organised 10 capacity-building programmes under the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises' Raising and Accelerating MSME Performance (RAMP) initiative.
According to a departmental spokesperson, the workshops focused on helping artisans improve product presentation, develop brand identities and adopt packaging techniques suited to domestic and international markets.
Participants represented several traditional Kashmiri crafts, including Sozni embroidery, Crewel and Ari embroidery, walnut wood carving, Papier Mâché, Pashmina and Tweed/Pattoo weaving.
Faculty members from NIFT and other experts conducted practical sessions on product identity, brand development, visual presentation and customised packaging.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
The spokesperson said artisans were also informed about the importance of GI labelling in identifying authentic products and improving consumer awareness.
The training covered packaging methods aimed at protecting delicate handmade products during transportation while presenting their quality, craftsmanship and value to buyers.
“Our focus revolves around promotion of GI crafts, ODOPs and other distinctive traditional crafts,” the spokesperson said.
The department said the initiative was intended to help artisans position their products more effectively in competitive markets, particularly where branding and presentation influence purchasing decisions.
It added that improved packaging and product identification could help traditional craft producers strengthen their market presence while preserving Kashmir's distinctive handicraft heritage. (KNS)
