Srinagar, Oct 21 (KNS): Jammu and Kashmir medical interns on Wednesday welcomed the government's decision to enhance their monthly stipend from Rs 12,300 to Rs 25,000, describing it as recognition of their work in the healthcare system.
Dr Mohammad Akib Javid, Jammu and Kashmir interns' representative and Joint Secretary of the All India Medical Students' Association (AMISA), thanked Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Health and Medical Education Minister Sakina Itoo for approving the revision.
“Today is a significant and proud moment for all MBBS and BDS interns of Jammu and Kashmir,” Javid said in a statement.
He also thanked Chief Minister's Advisor Nasir Aslam Wani (Sogami) for his support in taking up the demand with the government.
Javid acknowledged the role of opposition leaders who met the protesting interns, listened to their concerns and supported their demand during the agitation.
“We are equally thankful to all the opposition leaders who came forward, sat with us, listened to our concerns, and extended their support throughout this struggle,” he said.

“This achievement is the result of the collective efforts, unity, and perseverance of the interns of Jammu and Kashmir. It is not just an increase in stipend; it is recognition of the hard work, dedication, and service that medical interns contribute to the healthcare system,” he said.
Javid congratulated MBBS and BDS interns on the revision and expressed hope that the decision would encourage junior medical and dental students.
The statement follows the Health and Medical Education Department's formal order issued on Wednesday, enhancing the monthly stipend to Rs 25,000 with effect from October 1, 2026.
The revised stipend also covers Foreign Medical Graduates undergoing internships in Jammu and Kashmir.
The government order followed protests by medical and dental interns, who had continued their agitation despite the Chief Minister's approval, demanding a formal notification implementing the increase.
Javid thanked the government, the Chief Minister, Health Minister, CM's Advisor and opposition leaders for their support during the campaign. (KNS)
