Omar Abdullah condemns alleged police assault on CPI(M) MP in Delhi

Calls use of force against unarmed protester unacceptable, indefensible

Srinagar, Oct 11 (KNS): Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday condemned the alleged assault on CPI(M) Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas by Delhi Police during a protest in the national capital, describing the use of force against an unarmed demonstrator as unacceptable and indefensible.

Reacting to a post by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) alleging police brutality against the parliamentarian, Abdullah said the use of force could not be justified under any circumstances, irrespective of the protester's position.

“Unacceptable use of force by Delhi Police. Beating up an unarmed protestor, setting aside the fact that in this case the victim is actually an elected member of parliament, is unacceptable under any circumstances & is indefensible,” Abdullah wrote on X.

The Chief Minister said he joined his National Conference colleagues in condemning the alleged incident.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

“I join all my @JKNC\_ colleagues in condemning this reprehensible brutality,” he said.

Earlier, the CPI(M), in a post on X, alleged that Brittas had been assaulted by Delhi Police and subsequently left on the roadside in an injured condition.

“Rajya Sabha MP John Brittas was brutally attacked by the Delhi Police. He was later dropped by the roadside, visibly injured and in distress,” the party alleged.

The CPI(M) also accused Delhi Police of exceeding acceptable limits in its handling of the protest.

Abdullah's remarks came in response to these allegations, with the Chief Minister questioning the use of force against peaceful demonstrators and elected representatives.

The circumstances surrounding the alleged assault and the police version of the incident were not immediately available. (KNS)
