Srinagar, Oct 11 (KNS): Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader Zuhaib Mir on Sunday criticised the use of the phrase “Kashmirisation of India” to describe alleged state repression elsewhere in the country, saying the comparison risked reducing decades of Kashmiri suffering to a political slogan.
Reacting to the treatment of protesters in Delhi, Mir said their grievances deserved independent scrutiny, solidarity and justice, but cautioned against drawing parallels that overlooked Kashmir's distinct historical experience.
“The suffering of protestors in Delhi deserves scrutiny, solidarity, and justice in its own right. But solidarity should not come at the cost of erasing Kashmir's distinct and deeply painful history,” Mir said.
He maintained that recognising injustice in one part of the country should not require invoking Kashmir as a reference point for every instance of alleged state repression.
“One injustice does not diminish another, equally, one cannot invoke Kashmir merely as a metaphor for every instance of state repression elsewhere,” he said.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
Questioning the terminology, the PDP leader described the expression “Kashmirisation of India” as both misleading and contradictory.
“To call what is happening in India today the ‘Kashmirisation of India’ is, therefore, both a misnomer and an oxymoron,” Mir said.
He argued that such comparisons risked overlooking the specific circumstances and experiences of Kashmiris while turning their suffering into a convenient political reference.
“It risks turning decades of Kashmiri suffering into a political slogan while overlooking the specificity of what Kashmiris have endured,” he said.
Mir's remarks underline his objection to using Kashmir's history as a general political analogy, even while acknowledging the need for accountability over the treatment of protesters elsewhere. (KNS)
