Srinagar, Feb 18 (KNS) : Mawer residents on Tuesday claimed that several villages in the area are still forced to drink contaminated water from Nala Mawar despite crores of rupees being spent on water supply schemes since 2007.
They said three schemes were launched over the years to provide clean drinking water, but none have delivered results. The affected villages include Prongro, Warpora, Kharpora, Adora, Chak Adora, Dongosa, Omarabad Lam and News Basti.
According to residents, in 2022 and 2023 the Centre released Rs 2.31 crore for the Dongosa Prongro water supply scheme to cover these villages. However, they alleged that only minor repair work on the main pipeline and some fencing was carried out. They claimed that contractors and some department employees worked at selected locations to withdraw funds, after which the scheme was declared closed on the grounds that its time period had expired.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
Residents further stated that around 10 major pipelines have been laid from water sources near their villages to supply hundreds of other areas. Ironically, the villages located close to these pipelines remain without access to safe drinking water.
Locals expressed concern over rising health risks as families continue to depend on unsafe water. They have appealed to the administration to order a thorough inquiry into the alleged irregularities and fix responsibility.
They also urged Chief Minister Omar Abdullah to intervene and ensure immediate provision of clean drinking water to the affected villages.(KNS)
