Kupwara October 19 (KNS): In a landmark step towards transforming India's border villages into self-reliant and sustainable communities, the Indian Army, in collaboration with ASEEM Foundation and the Government of Jammu & Kashmir, inaugurated Project Roshni under the Vibrant Village Programme at the remote border village of Keran.

According to KNS correspondent the, inauguration ceremony was graced by Smt. Chinta Devi, Veer Nari and wife of Late Nb Sub Chuni Lal, AC (P), VrC, SM, one of the most decorated soldiers of the Indian Army. Her presence symbolized courage, sacrifice, and the enduring bond between the nation and its defenders.

Implemented under the aegis of the 6 Rashtriya Rifles Battalion, 268 Infantry Brigade, and 28 Infantry Division, the project rests on three pillars of development: Clean Energy, Clean Fuel, and Clean Water. Together, these initiatives mark a new dawn for the residents of Keran, long known as one of India’s most remote frontier communities.

Under the Clean Energy Initiative the ASEEM Foundation has solarized nine clusters comprising 107 households. Each home now has solar panels, batteries, inverters, LED bulbs, and power sockets, providing round-the-clock renewable power. This initiative ensures uninterrupted electricity during harsh winters and supports students in pursuing education without disruption.

As part of the Clean Water Initiative, a 2,000-litre-per-day water filtration plant has been established in collaboration with the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC). Supported by dual storage tanks and an uninterrupted power supply, the plant provides safe drinking water, ending years of struggle for clean water access in the village.

To enhance both safety and beauty, 90 solar-powered street lights have been installed along the Kishanganga River by the Rural Development Department. These lights illuminate Keran’s streets after dark, improving mobility and boosting eco-tourism in the scenic valley.

Expressing gratitude, a local community leader said, “We are deeply thankful to the Indian Army and ASEEM Foundation for bringing light, hope, and development to our village. Project Roshni has proved that progress can reach even the farthest corners of the country.”

The ceremony was attended by senior dignitaries, including the President of ASEEM Foundation and the Commander, 268 Infantry Brigade, reaffirming the shared vision of civil-military partnership and inclusive national growth.

Project Roshni stands as more than a development programme. It is a beacon of empowerment, symbolizing India’s resolve to strengthen its border communities through sustainable progress, self-reliance, and unity.(KNS)
