Experts stress patient-centred care, improved access to services and need to combat stigma

Srinagar, Oct 11 (KNS): The Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (IMHANS), Kashmir, observed World Mental Health Day 2026 under the theme “Lived Experiences Heard: Real Voices, Real Change”, highlighting the importance of incorporating patients’ experiences into mental healthcare, improving access to services and addressing the stigma associated with mental illness.

According to a statement issued to news agency Kashmir News Service (KNS), the programme brought together medical professionals and participants to discuss challenges faced by individuals living with mental health conditions and the need for compassionate, inclusive and patient-centred healthcare.

Speaking on the occasion, Professor and Head, Prof. Dr. Arshad, drew upon his clinical experience to emphasise the importance of compassionate and patient-centred care. He stressed the need to understand patients’ individual experiences and their journeys towards recovery.

Prof. Dr. Zaid highlighted the challenges faced by people living with mental health conditions and underscored the importance of integrating their lived experiences into healthcare practices to improve treatment and support.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

Dr. Yuman discussed key challenges confronting mental health services and called for strengthening access to timely and appropriate care.

Dr. Ifra highlighted the stigma surrounding mental illness and stressed the need for greater public awareness, acceptance and supportive communities to encourage individuals to seek professional help without fear of discrimination.

As part of the observance, a postgraduate quiz competition was organised to promote academic engagement and enhance knowledge of mental health issues. Dr. Rehana, Dr. Rutba and Takhleekh emerged as winners of the competition.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Junaid, who acknowledged the contributions of the speakers and participants towards making the event meaningful. (KNS)
