Srinagar, Oct 09(KNS): Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary on Thursday said that the people of Jammu and Kashmir continue to place their trust in the Constitution of India and its democratic institutions, including the Supreme Court.

Speaking to the media, Choudhary said that the residents of J&K have always believed in India’s democratic system and will continue to do so. He expressed hope that the Supreme Court will take into account the concerns and expectations of ordinary people in the region, particularly those living in remote areas.

He referred to the challenges faced by farmers, labourers, and shopkeepers, saying their everyday struggles should be understood by the country’s top court. According to him, one of the most pressing concerns is unemployment among youth in J&K. He said that nearly every household has at least one unemployed young person, and their voices, as well as those of their families, should be heard.

He spoke of the hopes that parents in J&K hold for their children — whether they aspire to be drivers, farmers, or pursue other means of livelihood. He said that the Supreme Court must consider these ground realities while deciding on matters related to governance in Jammu and Kashmir. Referring to the political situation, Choudhary noted that the region has had an elected government for a year now, led by Omar Abdullah.

He contrasted this with what he described as a previous period of nominated or selected governance. He said the current scenario raises an important question — whether Jammu and Kashmir should be governed by leaders elected by the people or by individuals who have been in power without electoral mandate for several years.

Choudhary said that the court’s decision will not only be legal but will also carry a deep message for the people of the region who have participated in the democratic process and placed their trust in elected representatives.

He also said that the aspirations of ordinary people farmers, drivers, workers, and parents must be given priority in all decision-making processes related to Jammu and Kashmir's governance.(KNS).
