Hailstorm wrecks havoc in Handwara villages

Srinagar, Apr 25 (KNS) The sudden hail storm on Monday damaged huge stretches of orchards and other crops in dozens of villages in Kupwara district.
 
Reports reaching Kashmir News Service (KNS) said that some villages including Nowgam, Rashwari, Lawoosa, Sazipora, Mawer Bala, Lach Mawer, Batpora Mawer, Shahrama, Qalamabad and Yahama witnessed hailstorm which resulted in heavy damage to apple, walnut and vegetable gardens. 
 
The villagers appealed to concerned department to visit the damaged orchards and direct the concerned officials to prepare the assessment report of the damages.
 
Director General Horticulture Aijaz Ahmed Bhat directed the concerned officials to visit the spots and prepare assessment report of the damages caused.
 
Moreover, the orchardists of the affected areas were advised
to follow the below mentioned recommendations:
· The orchards be immediately sprayed with any one of the
following fungicides (per 100 lit. of water):
? Zineb 68% + Hexaconazole 4% 72 WP (100 g) or
? Metiram 55% + Pyraclostrobin 5% 60 WG (100 g) or
? Mancozeb 75 WP (300g) or Zineb 75 WP (300 g) or
? Zineb 75 WP (300 g)
 
In addition to the above, the orchards may be sprayed with
Urea @ 0.2% (200 g per 100 lit. of water) Maintain proper orchard sanitation and remove fallen
fruit/leaves from the orchard. 
 
Meanwhile Fruit Growers And Dealers Association (Mawer) President Raja Akbar concerned over the hailstorm in Mawer villages. 
 
He also urged administration to depute teams to assess the loss, and provide compensation to affected fruit growers, farmers.(KNS)
