Bandipora, Aug 15(KNS): In a first for the Gujjar and Bakarwal Boys Hostel here, a tribal student on Saturday compered the district-level Independence Day function, while other inmates of the hostel secured top honours in cultural performances and march past.
Waseem Ahmad Poswal, a student of the hostel, conducted the proceedings of the district-level celebration in the presence of Deputy Commissioner Indu Kanwal Chib, senior administrative and police officers, students and a large gathering of people.
The occasion marked a significant opportunity for the tribal student to take centre stage at a major public function and demonstrate his confidence and public-speaking skills.
Adding to the achievement, students of the Gujjar and Bakarwal Boys Hostel secured the first position in the cultural show and second position in the march past held as part of the Independence Day celebrations.
Deputy Commissioner Chib felicitated the students and praised their participation and achievements. Senior officers of the district administration also appreciated the students and the hostel authorities for encouraging tribal youth to participate in co-curricular activities.
The administration said such opportunities can help students from tribal and disadvantaged communities develop leadership, communication and personality skills beyond the classroom.
The participation of a tribal student in conducting the district-level national function was also viewed as a step towards encouraging greater involvement of young people from marginalised communities in public activities.
The achievements have brought recognition to the Gujjar and Bakarwal Boys Hostel and are expected to encourage more students to participate in cultural, sports and other activities alongside their academic pursuits.(KNS).
