Poses serious threat to Trout fish: locals

Ganderbal 18 February (KNS): The emission of tunnel waste water and tunnel waste residue of Z-Morh tunnel near tourist resort Sonmarg in Central is posing a serious threat to trout fish of Sindh Mallah.

The waste residue of tunnel coming out of ongoing constructions is thrown into the Sindh tunnel without any treatment by the construction company, locals said.

They added that the blasting chemical of  the tunnel is also found in the water which makes the water harmful for consumption of downstream population and livestock.

“There is no mechanism of waste material disposal being adopted by the company. The way construction is going on will only add pollution and disturb the trout habitat in the nallah Sindh.

The work has been going on at snail’s pace and in coming year’s if company doesn’t adopt scientific measures, nallah Sindh is bound to lose the sheen known for its crystal water", they added.

Meanwhile, Director Fisheries J&K Bashir Ahmed Bhat said that he will send a team of officials to get the  report about issue.

" The construction company has also to get NOC from the department", he added.

Notably, the work on the construction of 6.5 kilometer tunnel between Gagangir and Sonamarg in Ganderbal district was started in the year 2014 after contract was awarded to Apco by the Government of India. This Rs 7,000 crore project is a part of the mega road communication project to ensure undisrupted connectivity between Kashmir and Ladakh. The tunnel will ensure the passage of 1,000 vehicles an hour at an approved maximum speed of 80 km per hour.(KNS)
