Two-Day National Conference on Child Psychiatry Concludes at SKIMS Bemina

Srinagar, Aug 23 (KNS) : The two-day National Conference on Child Psychiatry (NCPC-2025), organised by the Department of Psychiatry, SKIMS Medical College-Hospital Bemina, concluded here today with a strong emphasis on strengthening child and adolescent mental health services in the Valley.

Themed “Prevention to Intervention: Evidence-Based Strategies for Child Mental Health,” the conference brought together eminent experts from across India and abroad, who deliberated on a wide range of issues concerning children’s mental well-being.

The event featured workshops, invited lectures, panel discussions, a quiz competition, and research paper presentations. On the concluding day, sessions focused on community-based prevention strategies by Alisha Arora (CIP Ranchi), building resilience by training teachers, behavioural addictions by experts from NIMHANS Bangalore, and an innovative intervention model from Kashmir presented by Dr. Zaid A. Wani. Discussions also covered child psychopharmacology and screening for ADHD among school-going children.

The conference aimed at enhancing the skills of faculty, residents, teachers, and psychologists in addressing mental health concerns among children and adolescents. Feedback from delegates highlighted the need for regular repetition of such programmes and called for stronger collaboration between the Health and Education Departments. It was also recommended that a dedicated workshop be organised in October 2025 in collaboration with the Directorate of School Education, following proper approvals.

In his valedictory address, Dr. Fazulul Qadir Parray, Principal SKIMS Medical College Bemina, underscored the importance of assessing children’s individual capabilities to shape their future rather than imposing rigid teaching or parenting norms.

Dr. Mrugesh Vaishnav, National President and Hon. General Secretary of the Indian Association of Private Psychiatry (IAPP), lauded the organising team for hosting a “timely and impactful” event, while stressing the inclusion of school education stakeholders, who act as first responders for vulnerable children.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Prof. Abdul Maajid, Head of the Psychiatry Department, along with Dr. Nizam-ud-Din, who expressed gratitude to the faculty, delegates, and Directorate of School Education for their support in making the conference a success.(KNS)
