Srinagar – Jammu highway likely to be restored fully in 10 days

Srinagar, Jan 13 (KNS): Authorities on Wednesday said that 270-km long Srinagar – Jammu highway will likely to be restored for vehicular movement in next ten-days. However the continuous long shut down of highway has caused inconvenience to stranded drives and passengers who appealed authorities to expedite the restoration work.


According to Kashmir News Service (KNS), an official of Traffic Department said  the Srinagar – Jammu highway was closed for vehicular movement on Sunday after sudden collapse of the retaining wall of a bridge near Kela Morh of Ramban and since then the road continues to remain closed and may take more ten days to become motorable again.


The Traffic Department on Wednesday issued an advisory wherein it was said that restoration work on retaining wall of the bridge will likely to take ten days. The officials said that repairing by concrete filling and settling of the concrete is underway.


In fresh advisory Traffic Department has said that “Jammu – Srinagar National Highway shall remain closed due to sudden collapse of retaining wall of a bridge near Kela Morh, Ramban on January 10 at 06:20 pm. Repairing by concrete filling and settling of the concrete for making it motorable may take approximately 10-days as per project director NHAI”.


The advisory stated that as an alternate arrangement, in order to restore connectivity on this arterial road, a Bailey bridge will be installed by the Border Roads Organization. “In the interim, to restore connectivity a Bailey bridge is being launched by BRO,” the advisory said. The traffic police added that the Jammu-Doda-Kishtwar, Jammu-Ramban, Gool Sangaldan, Magerkot-Banihal, and Banihal-Qazigund stretches are open for local traffic.


Meanwhile the stranded truck drivers on highway have appealed authorities to ensure eatables to them as their pockets went empty. They said the trucks are stranded on the highway since week, earlier due to inclement weather and later on due to collapse of bridge in Ramban which added miseries to them.


However several passengers while talking to KNS expressed anger over arbitrary fare by passenger vehicles, saying drivers are taking undue advantage of damaged road condition of highway and are looting passengers while charging exorbitant rates. They appealed administration to intervene into the matter and provide a sigh of relief to passengers. (KNS)
