Satish Sharma kicks off J&K Cricket League, bats for Statehood

 JAMMU, Mar 6 (KNS) : Jammu and Kashmir Minister for Youth Services and Sports, Satish Sharma, on Thursday inaugurated the YSS–JKSC Cricket League at the MA Stadium here, using the platform to hail the union territory’s recent Ranji Trophy victory and reiterate the demand for the restoration of full statehood.

 
The tournament, organized by the Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council (JKSC) under the Department of Youth Services and Sports, has drawn 18 teams. Matches will be played under floodlights at the stadium and live-streamed on YouTube, officials said.
 
Speaking at the inaugural ceremony, Sharma described the UT's Ranji Trophy win as a historic moment of pride. "Jammu and Kashmir has immense sporting talent and the Ranji Trophy victory has proved that when provided with opportunities and the right platform, our youth can shine at the national level," he stated.

Restoration of statehood will further strengthen governance, empower institutions and accelerate progress in the region," he said.
 
The Minister also outlined a forthcoming sports calendar for Jammu, announcing a Football Premier League at the Mini Stadium, a National-level Cyclothon, and a Volleyball League aimed at expanding opportunities for athletes.
 
The cricket league carries a prize purse of ?3 lakh for the winning team and ?1.5 lakh for the runners-up. Individual awards, including 'Man of the Series' carrying a cash prize of ?20,000, have also been lined up.
 
The inaugural ceremony was attended by Secretary of the J&K Sports Council, Nuzhat Gul, along with senior officers of the department and representatives from various sports associations. (KNS)
