New Delhi, Oct 9 (KNS): National Conference MP Shammi Oberoi on Friday said his party stood firmly with the INDIA bloc in its campaign against alleged electoral irregularities and supported the demand for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and a return to ballot-paper voting.
Speaking to reporters near Rashtrapati Bhavan, where a 10-member INDIA bloc delegation had proceeded to submit a memorandum to President Droupadi Murmu, Oberoi said opposition leaders were demanding electoral reforms and accountability from the Election Commission.
"We are demanding the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner. Electronic Voting Machines should be replaced with ballot papers. The delegation will submit a memorandum to the President, and we will see what happens next," he said.
Oberoi said only 10 opposition leaders had been permitted to proceed towards Rashtrapati Bhavan, while the remaining MPs were stopped from moving further.
Asked whether the National Conference was part of the delegation, he reaffirmed the party's support for the opposition alliance.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
"The National Conference is absolutely with them in every fight," he said.
Responding to a question about his message to the people of Jammu and Kashmir, Oberoi reiterated that the party would continue to stand with the opposition in its campaign.
"We are with them in every fight," he said.
The remarks came as INDIA bloc leaders intensified their protest against the Election Commission over alleged electoral irregularities and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The opposition delegation, which included Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, proceeded to Rashtrapati Bhavan to place its demands before the President, while other opposition MPs remained outside following restrictions on their movement.
The National Conference's participation in the delegation and Oberoi's remarks underscored the party's support for the INDIA bloc's demands for electoral reforms and the Chief Election Commissioner's resignation. (KNS)
