Srinagar, Nov 24: Hurriyat Conference (M) Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq paid tributes to Kashmir’s two prominent journalists, late Khawaja Sanaullah Bhat, the founding editor of the daily ‘Aftaab’, and late Sofi Ghulam Muhammad, the founding editor of the daily ‘Srinagar Times’, on their death anniversaries and recalled their contributions to Kashmir's journalism.
The Mirwaiz said late Khawaja sahab and late Sofi sahab were two key pillars of Kashmir journalism who not only laid the foundation of Kashmiri journalism but also made the institution of Kashmir journalism strong and vibrant.
Meanwhile, Hurriyat (M) spokesman expressed concern over the condition of a large number of political leaders, workers and freedom-loving youth who have been held in various jails of Jammu Kashmir particularly in Central Jail Jammu and Kot Balwal Jail and condemned the government for its inhuman treatment of the inmates. The spokesman said a number of detainees are not provided medical treatment and the quality of food and eatables provided is substandard. The spokesman said that complaints were received by family members that when they go to visit the detainees after travelling hundreds of kilometers jail authorities create problems and cite different excuses for disallowing their meeting with their loved ones.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
While condemning the authorities the spokesman said such practises are a violation of Jail Manual and Geneva Conventions and urged the human rights groups to intervene and help provide the detainees with proper facilities and called for immediate release of all political prisoners.
Hurriyat (M) spokesman also denounced the continued house arrest of the Hurriyat (M) Chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, Senior resistance leader Syed Ali Geelani arrests and house arrests of resistance leaders including Ghulam Nabi Zaki, Mukhtar Ahmad Waza, Advocate Shahid-ul-Islam, dozens of other resistance leaders and thousands of youth.
The spokesman said the atrocities committed by government forces were at their peak and people in Zaloora, Wadoora, Kreeri Pattan, Bandipora, Bijbehara and other areas were at the receiving end of brutalities while scores of youth were being arrested arbitrarily and denounced the arrest of father-son duo of Bangdara, Kreeri, night raids in the area, ransacking of residential houses and harassment and beating up of residents.
