Liver Transplants save lives, encourage more people to make use of this treatment: Apollo Delhi Doctors

Srinagar August 24 (KNS): Experts from Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals highlighted the life changing impact and successful outcomes of liver transplant surgery in a press conference held in Srinagar. Led by Dr Anupam Sibal, Group Medical Director, Apollo Hospitals Group and Senior Paediatric Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals and Dr Neerav Goyal, Senior Consultant, Liver Transplant and HPB Surgery, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, the conference also showcased the advancement in  liver transplantation in India.

The conference was also attended by six patients, hailing from Srinagar, who had undergone liver transplant procedures at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals. They shared their transformational stories of battling chronic liver related complications and how with Apollo’s expertise they were able to get timely treatment and undergo liver transplant under the supervision of some of the best clinicians of the country.

The youngest of the 6 patients was a 3 years old boy, Midhat, whose mother had donated her liver to him after he was born with chronic liver problems, and the oldest patient was a 50 year old man, Muhammad Sharif, who had received a liver from a cadaver donor after suffering from end stage liver related complications.

Mr P Shivakumar, Managing Director – Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, asserted, “Apollo Hospitals leads the way in delivering care for patients. Our approach is aligned with Apollo’s overarching objective of providing prompt delivery of healthcare services, notwithstanding myriad constraints. This becomes even more important when it comes to caring for patients from outside Delhi.

Dr Anupam Sibal, Group Medical Director, Apollo Hospitals, Group, Senior Paediatric Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, said “At Apollo hospitals, we strive to be a trusted companion of a patient's medical journey from diagnosis to treatment to recovery. We want to continuously educate people around the advancements in medical procedures and the clinical expertise that Apollo has to offer. Srinagar has been one of the key regions from where we have been receiving patients on a regular basis. Six patients, including 3 children have undergone successful liver transplant at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals. We are delighted to earn the trust of families from Srinagar.”

We would like to create awareness about liver transplantation and educate people on how liver transplantation is a successful modality for end stage liver diseases for both children and adults. The Apollo Liver Transplant program has conducted over 4005 liver transplants of which more than 450 are in children. The youngest baby we have transplanted was 5 months old and the smallest weighted 3.5 kg. The first child we transplanted in India at the age of 22 months in 1998, is now himself a doctor 23-years later.

Dr Neerav Goyal, Senior Consultant, Liver Transplant and HPB Surgery, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, said, “Diseases related to liver have become very common in people worldwide and the trends are increasing day by day in India. Hence, expanding the awareness regarding the early diagnosis and treatment of such diseases in patients, Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals aims to reach out to people of Srinagar and its surrounding areas for providing insights on advanced health care facilities for better health management. As the burden of diseases related to liver are growing globally, it is important that an advanced means of diagnosis and treatment reaches across cities in India. We are happy that we can help them in easing their pain and providing a required aid for their complex health conditions. We have now performed very complex transplants – combined liver kidney transplants, ABO incompatible in patients with not only liver failure but also other serious co existing medical conditions.”(KNS)
