JK Govt constitutes panel for selection, purchase of books for Public Libraries

Jammu, February 26 (KNS): J&K Govt has constituted a 16-member panel for selection and purchase of books to be made available in the Public Libraries of the UT through the Department of Libraries & Research. The Committee has been named as UT Level Library Advisory-cum-Purchase Committee. 


According to an order issued by the Government, the members of the panel include Vice-Chancellor, Cluster University, Jammu; Chairman, Raja Rammohun Roy Library Foundation Kolkatta, Director General, Raja Rammohun Roy Library Foundation Kolkatta, Director Libraries & Research, J&K; Director Finance, Department of Culture, J&K, Representative of the J&K Board of School Education; Chief Librarian SPS Library Srinagar; Chief Librarian SRS Library Jammu; Satish Vimal (Hindi Language); Liaqat Jafiri (Urdu Language); Rajeshwar Singh Raju (Dogri Language); Ghulam Nabi Haleem (Kashmiri Language); Surinder Neer (Punjabi Language); Prof Parvez Majeed (Media Studies); Neeraj Rohmetra (Editor) and M Saleem Pandit (Journalist). 


The Committee will make selection of books across the board and recommend their purchase by the Government for distribution in Public Libraries of J&K. 


The Department of Libraries is this year laying special emphasis on selection of reference books for students preparing for IAS/KAS/NEET/JEE and other competitive examinations to make productive use of the resources earmarked for the purchase of books. 


The Department of Libraries has a network of around 140 public libraries spread across the nook and corner of J&K and these libraries are being repositioned as Career Guidance-cum-Counselling Centres to facilitate the students with reliable information about admissions in academic and professional colleges/universities, scholarships, fellowships and job opportunities.


J&K has the distinction of having oldest libraries in the region including SRS Library Jammu established in 1879 and SPS Library Srinagar established in 1898. He said these two central libraries have a collection of around 1 lakh titles including some rare books and manuscripts.(KNS)
