International Conference on Sustainable Development Goals with Special Reference to Climate Change begins at IUST

 Awantipora August 8(KNS): A 3-day International Conference on Sustainable Development Goals with Special reference to Climate Change was inaugurated today at the Islamic University of Science and Technology Campus. Prof Dinesh Singh, Vice Chairman Higher Education Council Jammu and Kashmir and Former Vice Chancellor University of Delhi was the Chief Guest on the occasion. Prof. Vinod Kumar Gaur, Former Secretary Ministry of Earth Science, GoI and Emeritus scientist at CSIR Fourth Paradigm Institute, Shri Saurabh Bhagat, Commissioner Secretary, Department Of Science and Technology Govt. of J&K and Prof Nilofer Khan, Vice Chancellor Kashmir University, were the Guests of Honour for the event.

Addressing the gathering, Prof. Dinesh Singh emphasized that sustainability transcends geographical boundaries and requires a united consensus along with collaborative endeavours. He stressed that the formidable issue of Climate Change necessitates a comprehensive approach across all spheres; otherwise, humanity is poised for a potentially uncertain future. Prof. Singh added that in accordance with the directives outlined in the National Education Policy (NEP) of 2020, the curriculum design should be such that it familiarizes students with the multifaceted challenges and issues confronting society. This, in turn, would nurture a curious and questioning mind-set, empowering them to formulate effective strategies and innovative solutions.

Prof. Shakil Ahmad Romshoo, the Vice Chancellor of IUST, in his address highlighted the pivotal role that academia plays in shaping strategies for well-informed policy formulation aimed at achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He underscored the undeniable significance of the SDGs for the advancement and preservation of humanity's progress. Prof. Romshoo emphasized that the ongoing crisis of climate change poses an imminent and substantial threat to these objectives. Expressing concern about the current global situation, Prof. Romshoo noted that despite being halfway through the timeline for accomplishing the SDGs, the overall progress has been less than satisfactory. He pointed to the increasing frequency of extreme weather events, such as heatwaves, glacier melting, and flooding, which have severe repercussions including displacements, livelihood losses, and substantial damage to both human life and property.

Prof. Romshoo emphasized the urgency of a serious commitment from the international community, particularly developed nations, in addressing the pressing challenge of climate change. He stressed that concerted efforts and substantial measures are required to tackle this issue effectively and to ensure a sustainable and secure future for all.

Saurabh Bhagat, Commissioner Secretary, Department Of Science and Technology Govt of J&K, extended his commendation to IUST for orchestrating a conference centered on a highly relevant and globally significant theme. He lauded IUST's efforts in driving impactful Green Initiatives, particularly its strides in harnessing Solar Energy. Shri Bhagat assured unwavering support for the university's research endeavors aimed at achieving the realization of Sustainable Goals. Emphasizing the tangible nature of climate change, Shri Bhagat referred to recent occurrences of forest fires in Europe and America, underscoring the immediate need for action. He acknowledged the undeniable reality of climate change and the urgency to address its consequences.

Prof Nilofer Khan, Vice Chancellor Kashmir University in her address said that we owe a clean environment to our posterity and said that sustainability means progress and development without depleting our resource. She emphasized on the participation of youth in the efforts for realizing SDGs.

The 3-day Conference will feature distinguished speakers hailing from various corners of the world, contributing their insights and expertise. Among them are notable individuals including: Dr. Shivani Pathania (Research Officer, FIDD, Teagasc Ireland), Dr. Sandipan Mukherjee (Scientist D, G.B. Pant NIHESD Ladakh), Prof. Sudhakar Yedla (Director NIT Srinagar), Mr. Rakesh Kumar, Director, Environment, Ecology & Remote Sensing), Mr. Faiz Bakshi (Director, Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry), Prof. Naseer Iqbal (Registrar IUST), Prof. Gh. Jeelani, (Dean Faculty of Earth Sciences, University of Kashmir), Prof.Javed Hussian Mir (Professor of Practice IUST), Prof. Fayaz Ahmed, Head Department of Environment Science, University of Kashmir) and many other renowned experts.

Dr. Asifa Baba, Dean of Students and Convener/ Organzing Secretary of the Conference presented the welcome address and coordinated the proceedings, while Dr. Munejah Khan, Dean School of Humanities presented Vote of thanks. Day 1 of the conference concluded with a vibrant cultural event organised by the University’s cultural committee, which was thoroughly enjoyed by the participants and students.
