In a first, 3 Kupwara villages get piped water under JJM scheme

Kupwara, Dec 13 (KNS): In a first, three remote villages in north Kashmir's Kupwara district got tap water with the implementation of Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) schemes. The that ended migration for these inhabitants as they used to migrate due to non-availabilty of safe drinking water supply.

Reports reaching KNS said that Batlan, Taraiyan and Chanbra villages in Tanghdar received piped water for the first time. The village, near LoC, till now were dependent on springs, nearby streams for drinking and other purposes.

The villages were provided water under JJM scheme, built at an estimated cost 165. 00 lakh. The scheme will supply tap water to 149 households.

Locals told KNS that they have got the tap water for the first time and thanked administration for providing water to these remote villages.

MD Jal Jeevan Mission, Dr G N Itoo told KNS that this is certainly an extraordinary achievement as JJM is envisaged to reach out all those habitations where tap water has not been provided till date.

"As per the scheme all the infrastructure required to achieve this objective has been planned, including the required funding. As we know most of the parts here are hilly areas, particularly this Tanghdar area, however, our teams worked day and night to complete the project in given timeline," he said.

He also said that so far they have achieved 75% functional household tap water connections and 25% is yet to be achieved, which mainly are in the areas where difficult terrains and scattered population.

"The infrastructure as per JJM guidelines in these areas is at the advanced stage," he added. (KNS)
