IBC J&K Organizes Webinar on Energy Conservation & Sustainable Buildings

Srinagar, Dec 14 (KNS) : On the occasion of Energy Conservation Day, the Indian Buildings Congress (IBC), Jammu & Kashmir Chapter organized a technical Webinar on energy efficiency, conservation and sustainable building practices and increasing energy demand.

According to a press release issued ,The Webinar was chaired by Er. Aamir Ali, Chairman, IBC J&K Chapter and was attended by over 100 participants including Engineers, Members of IBC, Architects, Planners, Government Officers, Faculty Members, Students and Energy Professionals from across the country.

Er. Aamir Ali highlighted that energy demand in Jammu & Kashmir rises sharply during winters due to heating needs and during peak summers due to cooling requirements. He emphasised that energy conservation must become an integral part of building planning, design and operation, and that energy-efficient buildings are essential for sustainability, affordability and resilience.

Er. M. Aaquib Sultana Waheed Deva, Chief Engineer, JKPTCL Kashmir, inaugurated the Webinar as the Chief Guest. In her address, she stressed the need to improve system efficiency, reduce transmission and distribution losses and strengthen grid infrastructure to ensure reliable, affordable and sustainable power supply.

She underlined the importance of energy conservation in achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 7 on Affordable and Clean Energy, noting India’s target of 500 GW installed capacity by 2030 with a significant share from renewable energy sources. She also emphasised responsible consumption in line with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12 and the adoption of energy-efficient, BEE-rated appliances. She observed that inherent losses across generation, transmission and distribution can be reduced though not eliminated and that winter generation remains challenging due to the hydel-based system.

She highlighted that these challenges are being addressed through infrastructure upgradation under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme, installation of smart meters, curbing pilferage and strengthening monitoring mechanisms.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp ChannelLinking energy conservation with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13 on Climate Action, she stressed that reduced losses and increased renewable adoption would help lower the carbon footprint and improve resilience to extreme weather events.

The technical session was taken by Er. Bashir A. Dar, Former Secretary (Technical), JKPDD and Managing Director, JK Green Technologies, who presented a detailed analysis of supply-side and demand-side energy conservation measures. He emphasised the importance of green buildings, passive design, high insulation, solar water heating, rooftop solar systems, under-floor heating, heat pumps and adoption of energy-efficient building codes suited to cold climatic conditions.

Er. Suhail Qadir, Founder & Managing Partner, JK Green Technologies, spoke on demand-side energy management and smart energy solutions. He highlighted the role of load shifting, smart load control, battery integration and building automation in reducing energy consumption and electricity costs, while also improving indoor air quality, particularly carbon dioxide monitoring, and occupant comfort through modern and IoT-based technologies.

During the open discussion session the participants emphasized that energy conservation requires a combined approach involving policy support, technical innovation and responsible consumer behavior, especially in an energy-deficient and environmentally fragile region like Jammu & Kashmir.

The Webinar concluded with a call for enhanced awareness, professional capacity building and accelerated adoption of energy-efficient technologies and building codes. Ar Masroor Ahmed Shah Project Manager, Srinagar Building Centre, Department of Housing & Urban Development, Er Rabinder Shekher Vice Chairman IBC J&K and Er Irfan Shafi Parray, Honorary Secretary IBC J&K Chapter also spoke on the occasion.(KNS)
