Jammu, January 22 (KNS) – The Northern Railway’s Jammu Division has achieved a significant breakthrough in regional logistics with the successful operation of the first full-length freight train to the Kashmir Valley.

In a landmark operation, a complete 42-BCN wagon rake, carrying rice, reached the Anantnag Goods Terminal within 24 hours of its departure, a senior railway official told the Kashmir News Service (KNS).

This development marks a substantial increase in freight capacity. Previously, on December 21, a shorter Food Corporation of India (FCI) goods train comprising 21 BCN wagons—carrying approximately 1,384 tonnes of food grains—had arrived in Anantnag from the Ajitwal Goods Shed in Firozpur Division.

The latest consignment, loaded from the Sangrur Goods Shed in Ambala Division on January 21, transported around 2,768 tonnes of rice.

Senior Divisional Commercial Manager (Jammu) Mr. Uchit Singhal told KNS, “This is a historic moment for the Jammu and Kashmir Valley. The successful arrival of the first full 42-BCN rake signifies a major enhancement in the region’s freight transportation and logistical capabilities.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp ChannelIt will significantly ease the movement of essential commodities for local traders and the public.”

He added that rail transport offers considerable advantages, moving bulk cargo from Punjab to Kashmir more swiftly and efficiently than road alternatives.

Singhal noted that this initiative—a joint endeavor by the Railways and the FCI—is expected to streamline supply chains, reduce logistics costs, and ensure a more robust and reliable flow of essential goods into the Valley.

He further stated that the service paves the way for the direct supply of grains and other commodities from across India to Kashmir via rail. In the long term, enhanced rail connectivity is projected to fortify the regional food supply network, support economic development, and provide a stronger foundation for the local economy.

The operation of dedicated FCI food grain trains is anticipated to play a pivotal role in strengthening the Valley’s distribution infrastructure and ensuring market stability. (KNS)
