Says due to extremely large number some candidates may still have to take test outside J&K

Srinagar, May 19 (KNS): After massive outcry over allotting of CUET-UG centres outside Jammu and Kashmir, the National Testing Agency on Friday said that it is exploring the possibility to create a temporary centre in Srinagar for most of the candidates who have been allotted centre outside the Union Territory.

An official told Kashmir News Service (KNS) that a total of 87309 unique candidates have been registered from Jammu and Kashmir and for 21, 22, 23, and 24 May, a total of 18012 candidates will be appearing in 12 Centers in Jammu and Kashmir, which includes 3 in Jammu, 5 in Srinagar, 2 in Baramulla, 1 each in Samba and Pulwama.

He said that for 25, 26, 27, and 28 May, a total of 44425 candidates will be appearing in 15 Centres created in Jammu and Kashmir, while some candidates have been moved out of the State.

"However, being sensitive to the needs of candidates and to case the access of the students of Jammu and Kashmir, the NTA is exploring the possibility of creating a temporary Centre in Srinagar. This will enable NTA to bring back most of the candidates to the State," he said.

He also said that, however, the number of candidates being extremely large, some candidates may still have to take the CUET (UG) outside the state.

Earlier in the day, Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor Manoj Sinha said that he has taken up the matter of CUET-UG exam centres issued with the Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.

He said that he has requested the Union Minister to set up CUET centres in Jammu and Kashmir. "Union Minister has assured him that the issue will be addressed on priority basis."

Aspirants from Jammu and Kashmir, who are going to appear in CUET-UG exams for various courses, earlier raised concern over allotting of exam centres outside the Union Territory.

Following backlash over allotting of exam centres outside J&K, regional political parties also raised concern and urged the government to address the issue soonest. (KNS]
