Kralgund, July 04:(KNS) Despite the constraints due to the Covid19, the students of the far flung area of Qaziabad Handwara in Kupwara district are striving to keep the spirit of sports up by organizing local sports events during these tough times.

In such an event, the student community of Ashpora organized a cricket tournament Ashpora Premier League in which 16 teams of the Qaziabad area participated. The matches were played at the famous Babagund playground of the area.

The final of the tournament was played today between the United XI and Shining Stars teams which was won by the United XI.

United XI won the toss and chose to bat first. Scoring 92 runs in 15 overs, they threw a challenge which later the opposite team couldn’t face. They were beaten by their hard bowling and fielding and could only score only 75 runs. United XI won the final match of the tournament by 18 runs and lifted the Ashpora Premier League trophy. Ahsanl-ul-Haq, captain of the United XI performed immensely in bowling and batting. Bilal Ahmad Malik scoring 36 runs was declared Man of the Batch.  Danish Mir was declared Man of the Series.

In view of the pandemic, a limited number of locals of the area, with strict social distancing and Covid19 SOP, were allowed to visit the beautiful Babagund playground, which is atop a hillock surrounded by apple orchards, to enjoy the matches of the tournament. The video recording of the match was prepared and provided to the cricket lovers.

“Ours is a hilly, backward area and we don’t have required facilities for sports events. Still our youth manage to organize sports events by their own efforts and resources,” said a local.

This was the first sports event this year in the area during which players as well as the spectators followed the Covid19 guidelines as prescribed by the authorities. Since Babagund playground is spacious, maintaining social distance was easier for the players and spectators.(KNS)
