Srinagar, Jul 7 (KNS): The Jammu and Kashmir government is considering replicating the Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology-Kashmir's (SKUAST-K) green campus initiatives in urban development projects across the Union Territory, Commissioner/Secretary, Housing and Urban Development Department, Mandeep Kaur, said on Tuesday.
Kaur visited the university's campus to review its sustainability initiatives and was accompanied by Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) Commissioner Faz Lul Haseeb.
During the visit, the officials inspected the university's integrated sustainability infrastructure, including rainwater harvesting systems, sewage treatment plants (STPs), plastic waste management facilities and other measures aimed at achieving a zero-waste campus.
Later, Kaur chaired a meeting with SKUAST-K Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nazir Ahmad Ganai and senior university officials to discuss ways to strengthen and expand the Green Campus initiative.
Appreciating the university's efforts, Kaur said the model adopted by SKUAST-K in water conservation, wastewater treatment, solid waste management and plastic waste reduction could be replicated in government-led urban development projects across Jammu and Kashmir.

"The initiatives undertaken by SKUAST-K provide an excellent and replicable model for sustainable urban development. By adopting proven practices such as efficient STP management, rainwater harvesting and scientific waste management in government projects, we can create cleaner, greener and more resilient urban spaces," she said.
Ganai reiterated the university's commitment to extending technical expertise and institutional support to the Housing and Urban Development Department for promoting sustainable urban initiatives.
The two sides agreed to collaborate on knowledge sharing and technical cooperation to promote environmentally sustainable infrastructure and institutionalise green governance practices across the Union Territory, officials said.(KNS).
