Locals resent restrictions, say quarry-related livelihood affected

BANDIPORA, OCTOBER 06 (KNS): The Department of Geology and Mining, Bandipora, has blocked all approach roads leading to the Saderkoot Bala Stone Quarry following reported instances of illegal mining during night hours, while imposing restrictions on mining and the movement of machinery in and around the quarry.

As per a public notice issued by the District Mineral Officer (DMO), Bandipora, no person has been permitted to fill, reopen, remove obstructions from, restore or otherwise facilitate access through the blocked approach roads leading to the quarry.

The department has also prohibited all forms of mining, excavation, extraction, quarrying and allied activities at the site, whether carried out manually or through machinery, unless specifically authorised by the competent authority under the applicable rules.

The notice further directs owners and operators of LNTs, JCBs, tippers and other machinery not to park or station their vehicles within a 100-metre radius of the quarry. Any vehicle found within the prohibited area, the department said, would be liable to seizure and further action under law.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

The department has warned that violation of the directions would invite strict legal action, including registration of an FIR and initiation of other proceedings under the applicable law.

Meanwhile, residents of Saderkoot Bala have expressed strong resentment over the restrictions, saying the move has affected local people dependent on quarry-related work for their livelihood.

The residents said restrictions have been imposed even on manual work carried out by local people, while blocking the approach roads has further compounded their difficulties.

They appealed to the government to look into their concerns and take a concrete decision on the long-pending quarry issue while ensuring that lawful activity and local livelihoods are not adversely affected.

The department has directed all concerned to strictly comply with the notice and warned of stringent action against violators.

The notice, bearing No. DMO/DGM/BPR/2026/27/929, was issued on October 6, 2026. (KNS)
