Srinagar, Jul 17 (KNS): The Chamber of Commerce and Industry Kashmir (CCIK) on Friday expressed concern over the rising prices of essential commodities, saying the increase in the cost of food items has put additional financial pressure on households across the Valley.
In a statement, the CCIK said mutton was being sold between Rs 800 and Rs 820 per kg, while chicken was retailing at Rs 200-Rs 210 per kg. Paneer was priced at around Rs 310 per kg and a tray of eggs was selling for nearly Rs 250 in several markets.
The traders' body said the prices of vegetables have also increased in recent weeks, making it difficult for middle- and lower-income families to meet their daily household expenses.
"There appears to be little accountability in the market. Every seller is charging according to his own will, and there is hardly any monitoring of retail prices," the CCIK said.
The organisation also alleged that despite repeated complaints about the increase in prices, the authorities had not carried out adequate market inspections or ensured compliance with notified rates.
According to the CCIK, the increase in prices has compelled many families to reduce the purchase of items such as mutton, chicken and eggs.
The organisation urged the authorities to strengthen enforcement of price control mechanisms to prevent overcharging and ensure essential food items remain affordable for consumers.(KNS).
