CUK celebrates International Yoga Day


Ganderbal, June 21 (KNS): Central University of Kashmir (CUK) Sunday celebrated 6th International Yoga Day via online/digital mode. Since its inception in the year 2015, June 21st is celebrated as the International Day of Yoga all across the world.
Speaking on the occasion, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mehraj ud Din Mir highlighted the significance of yoga in the life of an individual and its importance in tackling the challenges of physical and mental health, being faced due to the Covid-19 pandemic. He said, “Yoga is a form of Physical activity that helps us to attain physical as well as mental well-being and is not attached to any religion”. Prof. Mehraj ud Din Mir assured that the university in the future will be at forefront to endorse any such opportunity that includes health of an individual as well as of society.
Principal Government College of Physical Education Gadoora, Ganderbal, Dr. Hartej Singh, who was the guest of honour, deliberated in detail various aspects of Yoga and explained the role of yoga in controlling a number human hypokinetic diseases such as obesity, hypertension, diabetes etc. Addressing the participants, he emphasized that our primary focus should always be on health of the individual which in turn determines health of the nation.
The participants got highly benefited from the detailed deliberations on yoga by Directorate of Physical Education & Sports University of Kashmir, Assistant Professor, Dr. Jigmat Dachen, who was the guest speaker and presented a detailed module of daily yogic practices. He highlighted the importance of different Asnas in the yoga and in very lucid manner explained how a common man can start yogic exercises for the benefit of his/her over all wellbeing. The speaker also said that yoga is not only an exercise for physical wellbeing, but a complete system of clinical treatment for a number of human aliments.
In his welcome address, Dean School of Education, CUK, Dr. Syed Zahoor Ah. Geelani, highlighted the role of physical education, yoga and other sports activities helping in the direction of building a healthy nation. He ensured that School of Education shall play a leading role in promoting healthy work culture by initiating a number of sports activities and healthy work policies in future.
Professor Nighat Basu, former Dean and Head School of Education while addressing the participants said that every single individual should do physical activity in one way or the other and it is our sole responsibility to launch awareness programmes so that people can understand the significance of Yoga and sports in the health of an individual.
The event was organized by CUK’s Department of Physical Education. Besides a number delegates from across Jammu and Kashmir, the event was also attended by Dr. Gawher Ah. Bhat, Coordinator of the Department, Dr. Abdul Roof Rather, Dr. Mohammad Muzamil Shah and Dr. Ajaz Ah. Dar Assistant Professors of the department. The vote of thanks was presented by Mr. G A Bhat.
