Srinagar, 01 Oct: The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference Chief Spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq Thursday expressed concern over the controversy related to hijab at GMC Doda saying that preventing a woman from wearing hijab is contrary to the fundamental right to freedom of religion guaranteed by the Constitution of India.
Talking to media persons at the party headquarters, he said the Constitution of India guarantees every citizen the right to freely practise their religion and live according to their religious traditions. "Whether a woman chooses to wear a hijab or not is a matter of her personal choice and autonomy, and no one should impose restrictions on it," Tanvir said, adding that people belonging to different religions and communities in the country dress according to their respective religious traditions and customs.
"Members of the Sikh community wear turbans, Hindu women in different regions follow traditions such as the ghunghat and other customary attire, while members of the Christian community also observe clothing practices in accordance with their religious and cultural traditions.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp ChannelIn such circumstances, singling out Muslim women’s hijab for objection creates an atmosphere of discrimination," he said.
He said the situation that has arisen at GMC Doda should be thoroughly investigated and if any individual has attempted to prevent a woman from wearing religious attire, action should be taken in accordance with law.
He urged the administration to ensure that no dress code is imposed on the staff or trainee doctors at GMC Doda that is inconsistent with constitutional freedom of religion and individual choice. He said educational and medical institutions must maintain discipline and professional standards while fully respecting the constitutional rights and religious freedom of every citizen.(KNS)
