Pulwama gunfight: Army man, militant killed

Thousands attend slain militant’s funeral

Srinagar, Feb 12 (KNS): An army man and a militant were on Tuesday killed in an encounter that raged between forces and militants in Ratnipora area of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district.
Police and other government forces launched a search operation in the village in the intervening night of Monday-Tuesday after receiving credible inputs about the presence of militants there, officials said.
As the searches were going on, the search party was fired upon by the militants, which was retaliated, thus leading to a gunfight, police said, adding that one militant was killed in the gunfight whose body was retrieved from the site of encounter.
In the encounter, two forces personnel also sustained bullet injuries and were evacuated to hospital for treatment, however one of them identifier as Baljeet Singh succumbed to his injuries.
Police identified the slain militant as Hilal Ahmad Rather, son of Gh Mohammad Rather of Behgambagh Kakapora district Pulwama.
As per police records, he was affiliated with Hizb. “The slain militant had a long history of crime records and was wanted by law for his complicity in a series of crimes including attack on security establishments and civilian atrocities,” police said.
Several cases were registered against him for his involvement in activities and prominent among them are FIR No. 312/2016 at PS Pulwama U/S 147, 148, 307, 337, 332, 427 RPC, FIR No. 371/2016 at PS Pulwama U/S 147, 148, 307, 337, 332, 427 RPC, FIR No. 296/2016 at PS Pulwama U/S 147, 148, 307, 337, 332, 427 RPC and FIR No. 8/2018 at PS Karan Nagar U/S 302, 120-B RPC, 7/27 Arms Act which pertains to the militant attack inside the premises of SMHS Hospital in which two cops were killed and a Pakistani militant Naveed Jatt @Hanzalla had managed to escape.
“Body of the slain militant was handed over to his family after completion of medico-legal formalities,” police said.
Police said that incriminating material including arms and ammunition was recovered from the site of encounter while as a case has been registered and investigation was initiated in the matter.
They also appealed people not to venture inside encounter zone since such an area can prove dangerous due to stray explosive materials. “People are requested to cooperate with police till the area is completely sanitized and cleared of all the explosive materials if any,” police said.
Meanwhile, thousands of people today participated in the funeral prayers of the slain militant. The participants raised slogans in favour of freedom and carried the body of the slain in a procession to the open land where they offered funeral prayer to the slain militant.
The slain militant after the funeral was laid to rest at the graveyard in his native village. (KNS)
