Srinagar, Sep 15 (KNS): The Chest Diseases Hospital Srinagar, a key healthcare institution dealing exclusively with respiratory and pulmonary ailments, continues to face serious infrastructure and logistical challenges despite the dedicated efforts of its doctors, nursing staff and supporting personnel.
The hospital caters to patients suffering from a wide range of lung and pulmonary diseases. Various diagnostic, treatment and clinical practices related to respiratory disorders are undertaken here, with patients being examined and treated for pulmonary complications under the supervision of specialist doctors. The hospital also plays a particularly important role in the diagnosis and management of sensitive and potentially serious diseases such as tuberculosis (TB).
However, the condition of its infrastructure raises serious questions about the government's approach towards healthcare facilities. The hospital is attempting to move beyond its old and inadequate infrastructure and develop modern facilities, but the present arrangement remains highly fragmented.
The operation theatre is located several kilometres away from the main hospital, while the CT scan facility is situated at another location. Such a dispersed system creates considerable difficulties for patients as well as doctors, students, nursing staff and other healthcare personnel, who are required to coordinate services across different locations.
At a time when respiratory diseases, including tuberculosis, require timely diagnosis, coordinated treatment and adequate infection-control infrastructure, the existing situation appears particularly concerning.
When one looks at the infrastructure of an institution responsible for treating sensitive lung diseases, including tuberculosis, it appears that the government is presently in a state of deep complacency — seemingly asleep at the wheel.

Despite these shortcomings, the commitment of the doctors and supporting staff remains commendable. Their efforts to provide treatment and assistance to patients, even while operating within limited space and inadequate infrastructure, are visible and deserve appreciation.
The overcrowding and space constraints are particularly evident in the OPD, where limited infrastructure often creates difficulties for both patients and doctors. The shortage of adequate buildings and modern facilities further adds to the challenges faced by the institution.
The situation calls for urgent attention from both the Government of India and the Jammu & Kashmir administration. Health Minister Sakina Itoo and the concerned authorities need to take serious note of the infrastructure gaps and logistical difficulties confronting the hospital.
A specialised institution responsible for treating pulmonary diseases and sensitive conditions such as tuberculosis cannot be expected to function at its full potential when essential facilities are scattered across different locations and the main infrastructure remains inadequate.
The dedication of the medical, nursing and support staff is encouraging, but their efforts must be matched with a modern, integrated and adequately equipped healthcare infrastructure. The present condition of Chest Diseases Hospital Srinagar calls for immediate administrative attention, proper planning and a clear commitment towards strengthening pulmonary healthcare in Jammu & Kashmir.
