Senior advocate stresses judicial independence, constitutional values, professional ethics

Srinagar, Oct 09 (KNS): Senior advocate Ashok Bhan has been honoured by the International Law Centre for his professional excellence, acknowledging his contribution to the legal fraternity and his commitment to constitutional values, judicial independence and the rule of law.

Expressing gratitude for the recognition, Bhan said he accepted the honour not as a personal distinction but as a tribute to the legal fraternity, whose dedication and commitment sustain the foundations of constitutional democracy.

Reflecting on his more than four-and-a-half decades in the legal profession, Bhan said he had served the profession as a lifelong student, guided by diligence, integrity and unwavering faith in constitutionalism.

Addressing young lawyers, he described law as a solemn responsibility towards society, the Constitution and the cause of justice. He stressed that a strong judicial system is the bedrock of democracy and an independent judiciary remains essential to protecting the rights and liberties of citizens.

Bhan urged young members of the Bar to pursue professional excellence without compromising integrity, deepen their legal knowledge with humility and uphold professional ethics. He said courage in legal practice must be guided by compassion and that the Constitution should be viewed as a living promise renewed by every generation.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

Highlighting the role of the Supreme Court of India, Bhan said the apex court occupies a central position in the constitutional order and is entrusted with safeguarding equality, pluralism, diversity and the rule of law.

He said the judiciary must ensure that constitutional values prevail over power, prejudice and arbitrariness, while protecting equal citizenship, individual dignity, liberty, social harmony and justice for all.

Emphasising the shared responsibility of judges and lawyers in strengthening the judicial system, Bhan said the future of justice depends as much on the integrity, scholarship and courage of the Bar as on the wisdom of the Bench.

“A fearless judiciary cannot endure without a fearless and responsible Bar,” he said, urging lawyers to use their advocacy to represent the unheard, protect threatened rights and strengthen public confidence in the justice system.

He called upon members of the legal fraternity to defend liberty, uphold constitutional principles and ensure that justice remains a living right accessible to every citizen rather than a distant ideal.(KNS)
