Zainakote school wins second rank in National Water Award

Srinagar, Nov 21 (KNS): Government Boys Higher Secondary School (GBHSS) Zainakote has secured the second rank in the 6th National Water Award 2024, announced by the Ministry of Jal Shakti. The award ceremony was held at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi and was presided over by President of India Droupadi Murmu.

The award was received by the former Principal of the school, Ali Mohamad Rather, and Senior Lecturer Nyla Ali, who represented the institution at the national event. The recognition includes a trophy, a citation, and a cash reward of ?1,05,000. The school had also been acknowledged last year under the Special Mention category, marking its second consecutive appearance at the national level.

Speaking on the occasion, former Principal Ali Mohamad Rather said the achievement reflects the collective effort of students and staff.

“This honour belongs to every student and staff member. It reflects years of work and our belief that environmental responsibility must begin at the school level. Our students have shown that with the right guidance, young minds can bring positive change,” he said.

This award belongs to everyone—our students, our teachers, and all those who supported us. Water conservation is not just an activity; it is a necessity for the future. Teaching students to value every drop shapes responsible citizens. This recognition encourages us to continue our awareness efforts,” she said.

The school has been recognised for its initiatives including rainwater harvesting, grey water recycling, eco-club awareness programmes, student-led projects, and community outreach on responsible water use. These initiatives align with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which emphasises sustainability, experiential learning, and student participation in environmental protection.

The achievement has been noted as a significant moment for the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir and highlights the school’s role in promoting water conservation and environmental stewardship.(KNS)
