In a major breakthrough Kashmiri language experts Thursday unanimously adopted a standard for Kashmiri orthography. The literati also adopted a resolution seeking constitution of a committee by the Secretary JKAACL for raising the issue with the Government for formal approval to adoption of a uniform standard in Kashmiri writing.
According to a statement issued to KNS, the resolution was adopted on the third and concluding day of the 3-Day workshop on ‘Standardization in Kashmiri orthography’ which began here on Tuesday. Organized by the J&K Academy of Art, Culture and Languages the workshop saw participation of several Kashmiri subject experts who were coopted by the Academy for devising a common format of standardization for the Kashmiri orthography.
Representing various institutions, associations, and literary forums, the experts held thorough debate and discussion on various practical issues related to orthographic variation and standardization. In his message Secretary Academy, Dr. Aziz Hajini said that the objective of the workshop was to prepare a unanimous form of orthography for Kashmiri language. He assured that the Academy as aninstitution would vigorously pursue standardization procedures.
Coordinated by Encyclopaedia Kashmiriana Wing of JKAACL, the workshop was attended by several noted language experts comprising MY Taing, Prof. Marqoob Banihal, Prof. Nazir Ahmad Malik, Prof. Shafi Shouq, Prof. Mashal Sultanpuri, Rafiz Raaz, Shahbaz Rajourvi, Prof. Bashar Bashir, Manshoor Banihali, Dr. Afaq Aziz, Dr. Aijaz Mohammed Sheikh, Ali Ilyas, Shabir Ahmad Mir, and Dr. Mohammed Shaban among others.
Extension lecture by noted linguist, Prof. Nazir Ahmad Malik was the highlight of the concluding day proceedings. Exploring a methodological approach to orthography development involving language community as an active participant the workshop culminated with several key recommendations suggesting uniformity in Kashmiri writing system.
