Anantnag, Mar 10 (KNS): Debate and Seminar Committee of Government Degree College Dooru organized one day seminar on 9th of March 2020 to commemorate the International Women’s Day.
As per the management, the seminar focused on the major areas ranging from education to the falling sex-ratio.
The seminar was presided by principal of the College, Dr Mehnaz Sheikh, who traced the historical roots of International Women’s Day, based on the notion of equality and suffragette movement.
Dr. Fayaz Ahmad Bhat, HoD Sociology, in his presentation titled “Falling Sex Ratio” focused on the gender imbalance in Kashmiri society, and used data to show the district wise indicators of the Sex-Ratio and its influence on society as such.
Dr Hilal Ahmad Shah, HoD Urdu focused on “Feminist Critique in Urdu Literature” in which he highlighted how different branches of Urdu such as Novel, Short Stories have theorized women as weak, timid and emotional.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp ChannelImportantly he stressed on how contours of the discipline have been male defined.
Similarly, Prof Bilal Ahmad Pandit, HoD History, took historical approach to elicit position of women from ancient times to medieval times, and status enjoyed by women in different times under different rulers. His particular focus was Dida and Kota Rani, two prominent rulers of Kashmir.
Toward the end, Professor Fayaz Ahmad Bhat of Deptt. Of Education, brought to fore the role of education in women empowerment. His focus area was notions of rights that was made possible by education.
Overall, the seminar was a novel effort to understand the current state of affairs related to women rights and deprivation, and efforts needed to mitigate such deprivation (KNS).
