Srinagar, Oct 12 (KNS): Veteran freedom fighter and social activist Syed Ghulam Ahmad Bukhari passed away on Saturday at his residence in Kandoora (Beerwah). He was 90.
Bukhari was indisposed for some time. Large number of people from different walks of life joined his Nimaz-e-Jinaza and prayed for his soul.
Born on 23 April 1925,he studied at local Mazharul Haq School Beerwah and later joined SP Higher Secondary School Srinagar. He also visited Rawalpindi (Pakistan) in 1946 for further education. Bukhari was a close confidant of Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah and spent lot of time at Mujahid Manzil Srinagar in the company of Late Moulana Mohammad Saeed Masoodi during the freedom movement.
Later he took active part in Plebiscite Movement and was jailed in 1965 for leading the civil disobedience movement in his area.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp ChannelBukhari also was actively associated with the movement against the theft of Holy Relic at Hazratbal .He was first time arrested in 1965 and lodged in Kud jail. He was again arrested a few times but he did not compromise on his principles. After 1989 he had quite active politics and was involved in social work. He was among founder members of Jamiat-e-Saadat-e-Bukhariya Jammu and Kashmir.
Survived by two daughters and grand children, he lost his one son in law in a cross firing incident and other to a fatal disease. Bukhari's fourth day is being observed at Kandoora Monday. (KNS)
