The police action comes after the JKSA raised the matter with the DGP. According to an official communication from the Association accessed news agency Kashmir News Service (KNS), DGP Seth stated that the case has been taken with "serious and stringent cognisance."

An FIR (No. 26/2026) has been filed at the Vikas Nagar Police Station under Sections 117(2) and 352 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) against two individuals, including the primary accused, Sanjay Yadav, who has been taken into custody. Legal proceedings are underway.

The DGP emphasised a policy of "zero tolerance" towards assaults or intimidation targeting Kashmiri traders, affirming that they are "equal Indian citizens, constitutionally entitled to live and work anywhere in the country." He further assured that the investigation would proceed "strictly on merit" without any compromise.

While welcoming the prompt police action as an "important first step," the JKSA called for the accountability process to be "time-bound, transparent, and exemplary." The Association stated that acts of what it termed "communal profiling and mob violence" against vulnerable communities must not be normalised.
