Srinagar Nov 5 (KNS): Two days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled rally in Srinagar, authorities have turned the city into garrison, with security barricades on roads, checking and frisking of civilians intensified.
The area around Sher-I-Kashmir Cricket Stadium has been seized for public by security forces and taken over by Special Protection Group (SPG), a force assigned to protect the prime minister.
The road-length from Rammunshi Bagh police station to Radio Kashmir headquarters have been sealed for movement of people and traffic.
Due to the diversion on the road, traffic jams have compounded the movement of vehicles from Sonawar onwards and thus creating trouble for people to reach their offices and homes.
Dozens of checkpoints have been erected in the city for frisking of commuters and vehicles in order to watch out for any attempts of any untoward incident.
According to the KNS correspondent people entering the city centre from South Kashmir and North Kashmir complained about frisked at numerous places.
“The presence of barricades in almost every street has disturbed the life of people. We were checked at three places while travelling from Qamarwari to Lal Chowk,” said a government employee who was coming from Baramullah to Srinagar.
“All most every vehicle is being thoroughly searched by the police throughout the Srinagar city. A huge line of vehicles were seen at several points where the police were conducting searches which later leads to the heavy traffic jam in those areas. From Karanagar to Dalgate, our vehicle was stopped at three points by the police for searching,” said Mohmad ismaial, a resident of Karanagar.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
Security forces have also started keenly monitoring CCTVs that are already installed with the city to keep a close watch on people. A large number of security personnel in civvies have been mobilized within the city to maintain close eye on people and their activities.
Top police chief are also holding meetings with their officials to maintain foolproof security till prime minister is in the state.
SPG Inspector General of Police T Namgyal held a meeting with top officials of police in Jammu for stringent security measures when Modi is inaugurating phase- II of Baglihar power project in Ramban district of Jammu.
Sources told KNS that IGP Namgyal is visiting Kashmir on November 6 to take an overview of the security measures.
Yesterday, Director General of Police, K Rajendra held a meeting with top police officials to review the security measures for the visit of prime minister.
Modi is scheduled to address a public rally here on November 7, besides inaugurating the 450-megawatt Baglihar Phase II power project in Ramban district of the state.
All top Hurriyat leaders have been arrested, while hundreds of activists and know stone pelters detained by police from early this week to thwart the parallel ‘Million March’ program announced by Hurriyat groups.
Police’s cyber wing is also monitoring social networking sites for keeping an eye on users who promote the slogans and pages about ‘Million March’ program.
Meanwhile, sources said that bullet-proof luxury cars including a customized BMW have reached Jammu Thursday by train ahead of Modi's visit. (KNS)
