Calls on irrigation department to take responsibility; suggests groundwater use, solar pumps as sustainable alternatives

Srinagar, June 21 (KNS): CPI(M) leader and MLA Kulgam, M.Y. Tarigami, has raised serious concern over the growing scarcity of irrigation facilities in Kashmir during the peak paddy transplantation season.

Citing the impact of climate change and the drying up of water sources, Tarigami said the Irrigation Department must take responsibility for managing and distributing the available water resources efficiently at this critical time.

He expressed concern that the scarcity may lead to disputes over water distribution in various areas and said authorities should address it promptly.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

To counter the diminishing irrigation options, Tarigami urged the government to explore alternative solutions such as the optimal extraction of groundwater. He also advocated for expanding the use of solar water pumps, calling them a sustainable and practical option—especially in remote or off-grid areas—for both agricultural and domestic use.
