Tarigami expresses concern over plight of daily wagers

‘Govt should immediately formulate comprehensive wage, regularization policy’

Jammu, Jan 09 (KNS): Senior CPI (M) leader and MLA Muhammad Yousuf Tarigami today demanded that the pending wages of the daily wagers, casual labourers, need based and salaries of other temporary employees must be paid at the earliest as the workers have been facing severe hardships.
In a statement issued to KNS, he said daily wagers, casual, contractual, need-based, consolidated, adhoc employees working in different Government and semi-government departments for long period are not being paid wages. Most of these workers are paid only for two or three months annually that too on festivals. “They have been living under sub-human conditions.”
While expressing serious concern over the plight of these workers, Tarigami said that the land-donors in PHE, R&B, PDD, I&FC by virtue of which various schemes have become functional have neither been engaged and whosoever is engaged is not being paid wages. “Mali-cum-Chowkidars having provided land for construction of Panchayat ghars were appointed in 2014 but till date have not been paid any salaries,” he said and added that it is deplorable that these people have been put to sufferings and Government seems least bothered about their plight.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp ChannelThe government has failed to evolve a mechanism wherein these workers will get their wages and salaries on time without any hassles.
Over the years the governments have been constituting Cabinet sub-committees, Committees headed by minister, Chief Secretary to work out payment of wages and regularization of daily wagers, casual, need based, seasonal, contractual, CPWs, adhoc, consolidated, stated to be more than 61000 in number but neither any concrete steps have been evolved/suggested so far to redress their plight nor any report has been submitted by the aforesaid committees till date. The net result is that this section of workers and their families have been suffering adversely in absence of any mechanism for payment of wages and their regularization.
He demanded that government should immediately formulate a comprehensive wage and regularization policy of all temporary workers and ensure that these workers be paid i/ their pending wages forthwith; ii/ the payment of wages on regular basis in future and iii/ regularization in a time bound manner after completion of seven years of service.
