Calls for collective efforts to fight menace of drug addiction

Srinagar Dec (KNS): The Jammu and Kashmir National Conference Chief Spokesperson Tanvir Sadiq on Wednesday thanked party president and MP Dr Farooq Abdullah for allocating a hydraulic road roller to Shaheed-e-Millat Stadium Lal bazar at the cost of 6.5 lakhs.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the KPL2 Khan Bagh Premier League, Tanvir felicitated both the teams and hoped that budding sportspersons will make their mark in this sport, not only locally but also at the national level.

Tanvir, who was the chief guest on the occasion, said, "Dr Farooq Abdullah sahib immediately allotted a hydraulic road roller when I apprised him that the  local youngsters are in need of one for the stadium.  I, on behalf of the youngsters, had asked for a hand roller but he was kind enough to provide us with a Hydraulic one.”

Exhorting the youth, Tanvir said, “There is no dearth of talent in Kashmiri youth, all they need is to identify and sharpen their sporting skills.”

Emphasizing upon the youth to proactively contribute to a drug free society, Tanvir said, “Drug addiction has emerged as a big challenge to our society at present. Our youth are sinking into the quicksand of this pervasive menace, which if left unchecked can have huge bearing on their future.”

He said if NC comes to power we will ensure that all the stadiums of Srinagar are put at par with the best ones in the country.

Reports about the prevalence of drug abuse among youngsters particularly the school going children in Kashmir, he said, “If something substantial is not done to tackle it, then I am afraid we are going to lose a whole new generation to this menace. We see adolescents huddle together in certain areas. It is ridiculously available and the administration is acting as a mute spectator. Failing to act against the drug mafia and identifying the spots where these addicts huddle up; administration has also miserably failed to come up with more de-addiction centers, counselling centres to help control such delinquency. Absence of proper psychiatric and medical treatment is also compounding the menace. Administration on its part has failed to grapple with the issue primarily because of the absence of any policy framework and required budgetary support,” he said.

Earlier, the organizers introduced Tanvir Sadiq to the participants. A large number of sports lovers witnessed the final match.(KNS)
