Supreme Court's direction to release prisoners be implemented without delay: Vakil to Govt

Srinagar,19: May (KNS): Former minister and Senior Vice President J&K Peoples Conference Abdul Gani Vakil today slammed the UT government in delaying the release of prisoners thereby risking their lives who are languishing in several jails in and outside the Union Territory.

In a statement issued here to Kashmir new service (KNS), Vakil said that The current wave of coronavirus has been deadly. There are reports of various jails engulfed by the virus. It is a matter of concern that The govt is neither providing them sufficient medical aid, vaccination and nor they are being released on parole even after the clear directions of the Supreme court to release them at least for the period of 90 days.

The eleventh high powered committee presided by its chairman Hon'ble Justice Ali Mohd Magrey recently in a meeting too passed a slew of directions for the release of jail inmates except those involved in serious crimes but it is surprising that still the UT Govt. is showing complete insensitivity towards the inmates in jails. Vakil also expressed concern over the political prisoners who too are in imprisoned in different jails but not released till today although only two weeks ago a senior Hurriyat leader lost his life during his imprisonment. Great democracies do not through lives of political opponents in danger. Vakil added.

Vakil urged the Home Minister of India and the Lt Governor to release all the prisoners including political prisoners imprisoned in different jails in these challenging times. "We are all human beings and it doesn't behave the largest democracy like India to play with the lives of prisoners and political opponents in jails. Keeping in view the clear directions of the supreme court regarding the release of prisoners, the UT government must release them without any delay so that their families can have a sigh of relief That is now civilised nations behave," Vakil said.

Vakil also appealed to people to adhere to Covid19 guidelines and SOP's, as Jammu and Kashmir is witnessing a surge in covid positive cases each day. It is time to take precautions and help the administration in fighting the covid19.(KNS)
