the shifting of Faculty of Forestry from the campus of Sher-i-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology, Kashmir, Shalimar to a remote offshoot of the varsity in Beehama Ganderbal has exposed the students to problems of unique nature.
Students who demand that the faculty be relocated back to Shalimar or Wadoora campus of SKUAST-K were on three days protest till Monday.
“We feel we have been taken back to 18th century from 21st century,” said a student on conditions of anonymity.
He said the new campus at Beehama lacks every facility - from drinking water, electricity to internet connectivity. “The campus has no approach road and we have to walk about one and half kilometres on foot from main road to reach to the campus, which is very hectic as the way is sloppy,” said the students.
They said that doing to and fro from Beehama campus waste lot of their time, as the new campus has no hostel facility to house outstation students.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel“There is no proper infrastructure and we are suffering a lot,” the students said.
They added that commuting every day from SKUAST Shalimar campus in a staff bus charges them Rs 1300 per month. “Here too we are discriminated as staff members are only charged Rs 600,” said the students.
Vice Chancellor SKUAST-K Shalimar Tej Prataph Singh told KNS that he is ceased of the matter and will resolve the issues of students very soon. “Creation of infrastructure is the responsibility of government,” he said adding that he was exploring ways to provide free transportation to students travelling from SKUAST-K Shalimar campus to Beehama.
