Highlights Ecological, Cultural & Inclusive Urban Vision
SRINAGAR, JULY 29 (KNS): Srinagar Smart City Limited (SSCL) on Monday rebutted an article published in a local daily newspaper on July 28, 2025, regarding the Jhelum Riverfront Development, terming it as unbalanced and factually inaccurate. SSCL said the report lacked verifiable information and ignored the project's tangible progress and public impact.
In a statement issued here, SSCL clarified the status and intent of the development work being undertaken under the Smart Cities Mission, stating that the project is being executed with a strong focus on ecological sensitivity, urban inclusivity, and cultural revival.
Left Bank Development (Zero Bridge to Amira Kadal, 2.5 km)
SSCL stated that the entire 2.5 km stretch of the Left Bank from Zero Bridge to Amira Kadal has been fully completed and was dedicated to the public by the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor on May 20, 2023. Since its inauguration, the Left Bank has evolved into a vibrant public space, actively used by residents and tourists throughout the day.
The upgraded Left Bank features:
A continuous pedestrian promenade
Landscaped green spaces
On-street parking facilities
Stormwater drainage corridor
Undergrounding of electric and telecom utilities
Modern public utilities including toilets
High-quality street illumination
Universal access through kerb ramps
Heritage ghat upgradation with barrier-free entry
Integrated tree protection with interactive seating
SSCL added that before this intervention, the riverbank lacked pedestrian infrastructure and remained largely fenced off and inaccessible. The transformation has notably improved accessibility, especially for persons with disabilities and the elderly.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
The statement said the article fails to acknowledge the considerable daily public activity and civic engagement the Left Bank now enjoys.
Right Bank Development (Heritage Zero Bridge to Amira Kadal)
SSCL further noted that the initial stretch of the Right Bank, approximately 800 meters from Heritage Zero Bridge to the General Post Office (GPO), was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor on November 1, 2023.
The transformation includes:
New pedestrian access points from TRC to Heritage Emporium
A large surface parking under Abdullah Bridge
Modern public toilet facilities
SSCL said this portion has rapidly become a cultural and public interaction hub, especially during evenings.
The remaining stretch from GPO to Amira Kadal is nearing completion. Completed components include:
Laying of underground electric ducts
Wide pedestrian walkway
Walkway along the river edge
Upgraded accesses from GPO Lane, Polo View Road, SBI Lane
Development of kiosks and entry plazas
Ongoing works include landscaping, commissioning of underground electric network, illumination, and installation of seating areas—all on a fast-track basis.
SSCL emphasized that the Jhelum Riverfront Development Project has turned previously neglected riverbanks into safe and inclusive public spaces, significantly improving quality of life and fostering civic pride.
The corporation maintained that the article published in the local daily overlooks the measurable and visible progress made under the initiative and misrepresents a project that continues to bring substantial benefits to the people of Srinagar. (KNS)
