Srinagar court bars Amar Singh Club from admitting new members

Interim restraint comes amid challenge to former managing committee’s continuation beyond its tenure; next hearing on Nov 6.

Srinagar, Oct 20 (KNS): A court in Srinagar has restrained the former managing committee of Amar Singh Club from admitting new members until the next hearing on November 6, pending adjudication of a dispute over the committee’s authority to continue in office after the expiry of its tenure.

The order passed by the court of the 2nd Additional District Judge, Srinagar accessed news agency Kashmir News Service (KNS) reads on an application filed by four permanent members of the club, including Zafar-ul-Islam, who have challenged the committee’s continuation beyond its two-year term.

According to the petitioners, the committee’s tenure ended on January 12, 2026, and it could not continue exercising the powers of an elected body without a lawful extension. They have also questioned its authority to admit new members after the expiry of its term.

The petitioners argued that fresh admissions during the pendency of the case could change the club’s membership structure and affect the rights claimed by them in the suit.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel

While considering the application, the court observed that the committee’s authority to continue in office, as well as its competence to enrol new members, required examination in light of the club’s governing constitution and the rival contentions of the parties.

At this stage, the court said, fresh admissions could alter the existing position and have a bearing on the dispute.

The court directed the former managing committee and all persons acting under its authority not to enrol or admit any fresh members until the next date of hearing, subject to further orders.

It also issued notices to the defendants, directing them to appear and file their objections.

The matter will be taken up on November 6. The order is interim in nature and does not constitute a final determination of the legality of the former committee’s continuation in office the order reads. (KNS)
