Srinagar, Nov 20 (KNS): Union Minister for Railways, Information and Broadcasting, electronics and information technology Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Thursday that social media is playing a major role in breaking public trust through deepfakes, synthetic content and fast-spreading rumours.
He said the growing volume of manipulated material circulating online is creating serious concern and is affecting the relationship between citizens and institutions. According to him, this disruption has become a common worry across sectors.
Vaishnaw said social media platforms must take responsibility for what they publish so that society is not harmed by the content they host. He said as per KNS, the government is using a “techno-legal approach” to deal with these challenges.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
Explaining this approach, he said India adopted a principles-based Data Protection Act because technology changes rapidly and rigid laws cannot keep pace. He said the aim is to combine innovation with regulation so that positive developments reach the public while harmful elements are addressed.
Minister said the government is working closely with industry and civil society to build the right balance in this framework.
Vaishnaw said every company operating in India must follow the Constitution and the country’s laws. He said platforms must understand India’s social structure, its diversity and the environment in which they function, and act responsibly within that context.(KNS)
