Srinagar, Jun 05 (KNS): Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) on Tuesday organised a function here at Central Municipal Office Karan Nagar in connection with the world Environment day which is being celebrated across the globe on 5th of June.
All the senior officers of the Corporation including the ward officers and other employees participated in the function.
Students from New Bonvent School Eidgah Road Hawal also participated in the event.
Joint Commissioner Adm Ghulam Nabi Bhat on the occasion spoke about the importance of conserving the Environment and the much role of the youth to be played in protecting the mother nature by planting more and more trees.
“Every day is an environment day for us as our employees takes up challenge each morning to keep Srinagar city clean which forms an important part of Environment,” said Bhat.
Secretary SMC Hilal Ahmed Deewani while speaking on the occasion highlighted the role of each citizen of the society especially the children and students. “It has to be a social and collective responsibility in protecting and keeping the environment healthy and clean,” he said.
While talking about the hazardous effects of use of polythene and plastic bags Chief Sanitation Officer Sufi Mohammad Akbar made an appeal to the students not to use polythene and plastic bags in schools, homes even to refuse taking polythene in markets while shopping.Click Here To Follow Our WhatsApp Channel
He said it is the responsibility of one and all in eradicating the polythene menace.
As a government institution we are putting our efforts in making an anti polythene campaign sustainable through the enforcing squad and awareness campaigns on print and electronic media but the support from all walks of life is needed to end up with the polythene menace said Sofi.
He also thanked Principal Bonvent School Nazir Ahmed Wani for showing active participation of his students in such kinds of events.
Others who also spoke on the occasion were Justin Robert Shaw from London based Green Kashmir NGO, Solid Management Officer Nazir Ahmed Baba, Municipal Employees Union president Maqbool Malik, Municipal Workers Union President Gh Mohhamad Solina, Ward Officer Shahid Israar.
Later all the students and employees of Corporation organised a rally and took to streets outside SMC.
They marched towards Karan Nagar holding placards in their hands and shouting slogan against the use of plastic and polythene bags.
Hundreds of pamphlets carrying anti polythene messages and its ill effects were distributed among Shopkeepers, pedestrians and others locals. (KNS)
