SKUAST-K kick-starts plantation drive

Srinagar, Nov 24 (KNS): Faculty of Forestry , Benhama-Watlar, Sher-i-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K) in collaboration with the Bhamla Foundation, Mumbai, Maharashtra today kick started its Plantation drive at its campus. 

The drive started with the planting of Deodar near Pine Boys Hostel by Asif Bhamla, Chairman of the Foundation, CEO Meraj Bhamla along with the other officials of the Foundation and Dean, Faculty of Forestry, Prof. Tariq Masoodi, Heads of the Divisions, Faculty members and students who participated in the drive. 

This will be the start of month long plantation drive which will be done in our campus, said Prof. Masoodi while welcoming the foundation chairman and other associated staff. We continue these drives every year and this time we are happy that these organizations are coming forward in these green initiatives. We have took this challenge to make our campus green, despite being on the southern aspect. Officials from Police department and various volunteers also took part in the drive. 

After the plantation drive, an interaction among the students and Foundation staff was held under the Students Welfare department, in which Students Welfare officer, Dr Naseem Geelani gave a welcome address and said that these programs encourage our students to take part in these green initiatives which are needed for the conservation and protection of our environment.  

On the occasion, Asif Bhamla wholeheartedly thanked the Faculty of Forestry for their hospitality and praised for their efforts in making this campus a “Green Campus” and said we will be collaborating with the Faculty in the upcoming projects and will try to have MOU for our various programs.  

Dr GM Bhat on the occasion said that it is need of the hour to have such programs which will create awareness among the masses regarding our ecology and environment.  

Prof. SA Gangoo presented the vote of thanks and said that you are much aware about the pollution levels by fossil fuels and we should switch to the clean green initiatives and the tree planting is the best among; because the trees sequester the carbon dioxide from the atmosphere thus help us in cleaning our environment.
